37 years ago around this time, midnight in California USA, two cats my housemate Brian and I heard on FM radio that John Lennon had been killed three time zones East in NYC. Hours later, drinking and despairing we lit a small kerosene fire in front of our house and broadcast select Sgt Pepper tracks from our front window onto the early morning streetscape. A two-man Santa Cruz Police unit rolled up and confronted us after a while and one officer asked us if we were looking for trouble. We told him that John Lennon was dead. He returned to his car, presumably confirmed this news via radio, came back to us with a gesture to desist, an empathetic glance, and lastly a somber wave walking back toward his wheels before he and his partner motored off without further comment. RIP John.
